Florida Birds - 2020
Day 1 PM |
Gatorland |
Alligator 1
Very satisfied.
Egret on Alligator 2
Didn't really expect to see an egret on an alligator with his reflection in the water.
(p)
Flying Egret 1
Numerous opportunities to photograph egrets in flight. I've never felt so inept trying to photograph flying birds.
(p)
Flying Egrets 2
You get lucky once in awhile and capture a really different image.
(p)
Alligators 3
When I want to photograph alligators, I want to photograph alligators.

Flying Egret 3

Alligator 4
These guys are old and move really slow. Great looking teeth. Not.

Flying Egret 4
Lonely Croc 1
There are no crocodiles in the wild in Central Florida.
This guy was just trying to cool off with his mouth open.
Nice teeth though.
Wood Stork 1
Yes, these are the birds that deliver human babies or at least that is what you tell your children.
(p)
Alligators 2
My final and almost favorite alligator image. Taken in bright backlit lite later in the afternoon. I think it captures the essence of what it is to be an alligator.
Day 2 |
Lake Kissimmee - Overstreet Landing |
On Location
Landscape 1
You never know what you are going to see as I left the public restroom.
(p)
iPhone 10
Flying Limpkin
Don't often see images like this. More of a point, shoot, luck, shot.
(p)
Pastoral Landscape 1
I like pastoral images and then throw in a flock of birds.
(p)
Pastoral Landscape 2
Ahh, cows. Lots of paintings of California in the 1800s contained cows. Moo.
(p)
Grackle Eating Snail
The return of some bird species has returned due to the accidental introduction of some non- native snails. Increased the food supply.
Bald Eagle Taking Off
Spent most of an afternoon photographing a pair of eagles caring (term used lightly) for their eaglet in a nest.
Eagle Nest with Baby
Greedy baby and dysfunctional parents. Sounds like humans.
Bald Eagle 2 Landing
Good looking bird.

Day 3 |
Lake Blue - On way to Delray |
On Location
Egrets Morning Shore Side
Incredible beauty but I don't think I captured the experience very well. It was friggin awesome.
Ibis Flock
Love flocks of birds.
(p)
Osprey Flying 1
The eye says it all.
Osprey with Fish Flying 2
The desired image is a flying Osprey with a whole fish. So many shots had a partially eaten fish.
Lovers
All he did was stand on her back for a few minutes..
(p)
Cormorant
This image kind of popped out of nowhere but it seemed kind of artistic.
Osprey with Fish Flying 3
Beautiful blue background is the desired objective but I don't care for it that much.
(p)
Swamp Landscape 1
Being from arid California, I really like swamps. But the weather was perfect. I'm sure it's not like that most of the time. No mosquitoes either.
Tail
Awesome tail.
Spoonbill & Ibis
Didn't expect these birds in the same tree at all.
Two species.
(p)
Osprey 5
Almost deleted this image. It's a lot tougher than it looks catching birds taking off. Those claws are incredible.
(p)
Swamp Landscape 2
Awe, more swamp. Really, this was a bird work shop, not a swamp workshop.
Flying 6

Osprey 6

Sunset
This setting kind of caught me by surprise. I had no idea it was getting so late in the day.
(p)
Day 4 |
Stick Marsh - Delray |
On Location
This row of palm trees looked awesome because of the lighting. Came back an hour later, looked flat and boring. |
Egrets Flying
I love images of a bird with another bird flying in the background out if focus including mysterious clouds.
(p)
Spoonbill & Reflection
For me, this image epitomizes birds in Florida. It's just not a Flamingo. I actually like Spoonbills more than Flamingos.
(p)
Spoonbills Nesting 1
Egret Flying 2
Can't really get enough images of Egrets in flight.
(p)
Spoonbill Flying 1
Anhinga 1
It took me a couple days to figure out that the Anhinga and Osprey were the birds to photograph.
(p)
Spoonbill Flying 4
Minimalist 1
Somehow, this image needs to be set aside from the rest of the site. Minimalist images aren't meant to be included with a bunch of other images. It's distracting. That's why I put it at the end this section

Day 5 |
Wakadahatchee - 1 - Delray |
On Location
Egret Flying 1
(p)
Wood Stork Flying 1
Egret Reflection 1
Getting the reflection properly exposed was quite challenging due to the darkness of the scene.
I had several opportunities but didn't quite get it right..
(p)
Great Blue Heron Reflection 1
These were kind of random shots but turned out better than I thought they would.
Great Blue Heron Reflection 2
(p)
Egret Flying 2
Anhinga Flying 1
This guy was moving very quickly and my D850 was actually able to capture it, especially with all the confusing leaves in the background.
(p)
Tricolored Heron Fishing
Only under certain light do these birds project their gorgeous blue color.
Wood Stork 3
Most birds photographed were collecting nesting materials.
(p)
Egret Primping
Didn't really see many Egrets primping their feathers during the trip.
(p)
Anhinga with Tilapia
It was a real treat (pun) watching this Anhinga take down the Tilapia fish.
(p)
Wood Stork Landing 2
Great Blue Heron Wading
I like environmental shots, especially with S curves.
(Environment image)
(p)
Swamphen
The greens and blues are even more striking in real life.
Day 6 |
Wakadahatchee - 2 - Delray |
On Location
Anhinga Flying with Nesting Materials
This guy takes collecting nesting materials to a new height.
Whistling Ducks
Grab shot. Tried to get against blue sky but this was kind of interesting.
(p)
Wood Stork
(p)
Lilly Pads
I turned around from shooting some birds and saw this backlit lily image against the bright sun.
(p)
Great Blue Portrait
Baby Cormorant Feeding
These babies, almost as big as their parents, are super aggressive thrusting their heads down the throats of their parents. Yes, both parents feed the children.
See You Later ... alligator.
